A fully upgraded Noosa Parade is now officially open, with dedicated bike lanes, widened paths, slower road speeds and improved lighting.
Local councillor Amelia Lorentson and Noosa MP Sandy Bolton officially opened the upgrade Noosa Parade, which is one of Noosa Heads’ busiest bike and pedestrian routes.
Cr Lorenston said to Noosa Today: “Residents tell us they would use their bikes more if there was more infrastructure”.
“Bike riding, whether it is for sport, commuting or just for recreation, is a popular activity in Noosa. The 1.5 metre on-road bike lane and permanent reduction in the speed limit to 40km will help improve road safety for all users.
The $8 million upgrade was funded by both local and state government.
The major upgrade of this popular active transport corridor includes the following:
- reducing the speed limit to 40km/h
- providing dedicated and continuous on-road cycle lanes in both directions
- upgrading the northern pathway to 2.5m wide and 3m wide where possible
- upgrading the southern pathway to 1.5m wide
- providing eight mid-block pedestrian refuges
- installing improved LED lighting.
The upgrades were a key project in Noosa’s Cycling and Walking Strategy, which aims address future congestion issues, reduce emissions and increase the uptake of active travel in the shire.
Noosa Council have stated that they will be spending $12.8 million over the next 10 years on walking and cycling projects.
The fully upgraded Noosa Parade was identified as one of the low-cost, high-priority projects that could be delivered in the short term.
