Work on stage three of the St Kilda Road separated bike lane project gets underway on Monday in the Junction precinct.
Construction will be between Union Road and Wellington Street southbound and Union Street and Barkly Street on the city-bound side of the road.
Stage one has now been completed while stage two is progressing. The project is expected to be wrapped up by the end of this year.
During construction, contractors need to temporarily close sections of the outer traffic lanes in each direction on St Kilda Road between Union Street and St Kilda Junction.
At St Kilda Junction, there’ll be intermittent lane and road closures at night to minimise impacts to traffic during the day.
There will also be changed traffic conditions, reduced speed limits, reduced parking and restricted access to loading zones while these works take place.
The work will involve:
- Setting up our work areas with installation of safety fencing, barriers and bollards
- Removal of the old road surface
- Installation of kerb separators and laying new asphalt
- Removal of some kerbs, gutters and some traffic signal poles before installing new ones
- New line marking and surface treatments
- Replacement of the footpath on the section of Wellington Street that crosses Punt Road with a new shared walking and cycling path
Most works will take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm, Saturdays.
Works around St Kilda Junction will occur at night to minimise impacts to traffic during the day.
As part of the project, the northbound left turn from St Kilda Road to Barkly Street will be permanently closed
This closure will reduce risk for bike riders and drivers by removing an unsafe conflict point with left turning traffic.
This permanent change will also reduce lane choice confusion for drivers wanting to turn left onto Fitzroy Street or Queens Way.
From early 2023, drivers wanting to access Barkly Street from St Kilda Road will be able to do so from Alma Road.
