Take two wheels to the tennis

If you're heading to the Australian Open at Melbourne Park over the next two weeks, why not make the trip by bike?

Riding a bike is a great way to get to the tennis – it's of course healthy, but you'll also avoid city traffic and be able to pull up right out the front.

There are plenty of places to park your bike and easy family-friendly routes from all corners of Melbourne.

You can check out the Google Map below with suggested routes and bike parking locations to help you get to the tennis, or take a look at our tips on how to plan a bike friendly route. Live too far away? You can still ride part way and lock up at a Parkiteer cage near your local train station.

From the north

The Moonee Ponds Creek, St Georges Road and Upfield paths are all off-road routes you can take towards the city.

If coming from an inner-suburb you can use the new protected bike lane on Wellington Street in Collingwood before taking Clarendon Street into Yarra Park and around the MCG.

Either cross the bridge over the railway line to Olympic Boulevard or find a spot to lock up your bike around the MCG and enjoy a walk through the park.

From the east

If you fancy a workout with your ride you can take Yarra Boulevard and link up to Albert Street before taking a left onto Clarendon Street to take the same approach to Melbourne Park as above.

Coming from the south-east you can enjoy a completely car-free route by following the Gardiners Creek Trail which links up to the Main Yarra Trail in Burnley and follows the Yarra River into the city.

Stay on the north side of the Yarra until you reach the Swan Street Bridge where you can cross at the traffic lights and lock-up along Olympic Boulevard.

From the south

Get some sea breeze and take the Bay Trail before linking up to St Kilda Road via Fitzroy Street to head into the city.

Follow the St Kilda Road bike lane until the NGV where you can turn onto Linlithgow Avenue and use the new protected bike lanes to get to Swan Street Bridge.

From the west

Anyone riding in from the West (Moonee Ponds Creek Trail or Footscray Road) can link up with the Main Yarra Trail near Costco in Docklands and follow this around through Southbank onto the south side of the Yarra River.

Simply follow the river until Swan Street Bridge, where you can cross over the river and park up right at the front of Melbourne Park.

Australian Open Bike Parking

Bike parking

Bring a good lock and you’ll be able to park your bike on any available rails around the perimeter of Melbourne Park. You can also find plenty of spots around the MCG and Yarra Park, giving you an easy 5 minute walk to the action. Check out the attached map for the best spots around the grounds depending on your approach.

Bike parking locations

There are two official bike parking locations near entrances to the Australian Open – one at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Batman Avenue and another underneath the William Barrack Bridge if approaching from Flinders Street.

You can find these spots on the official 2023 Australian Open transport map.

There are also plenty of other public bike parking spots you can use. We've marked them on the Google Map above for you.
