Substation works to impact bike lanes

Major works start soon on the construction of a new tram substation in Royal Park in Parkville.

Adjacent to Flemington Road, the construction activities will result in temporary footpath and bike lane closures around the worksite with local detours in place.

There will be one city bound lane closure on Flemington Road, near the Royal Park Tram Reserve entrance, required to allow heavy machinery to move in and out of the reserve and ensure that works are conducted safely.

Access to The Royal Children’s Hospital will be maintained at all times.

Traffic management and signage will direct other traffic around the works.

Preparations to build the new substation – which will also house tram driver amenities – will start with round the clock works from Tuesday 31 January to Monday 6 February 2023.

24-hour works will include:

  • Setting up the work site, fencing and traffic management.
  • Excavating road surfaces and tram tracks.
  • Moving heavy machinery, excavators and large trucks in and out of the tram reserve.
  • Installing electrical services under the tram tracks.
  • Removing old underground cables.
  • Relocating and protecting a palm tree to the north of the site.
  • Drainage works, including the excavation, installation and backfill of pipes.
  • Connecting electrical cables and assets to the overhead poles.
  • Preparing for construction of a new substation and tram driver amenities.

After 6 February 2023, the build and fit out of the new substation will be during normal work hours from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm, Saturday.

These works will continue until November 2023. Notification will be given in advance if there are further disruptions.

There will be service changes to tram routes 57, 58 (Zoo) and 59 during the February works.
