Bike Week for rides, films & volunteering

Our local bike riding groups are pulling out the stops for Bike Week this year, with social rides, film screenings, bike maintenance and a retro bike show.

A full listing of the week across the state is available on the Tasmanian Bicycle Council website: https://tasbicyclecouncil.org.au/bike-week/

TBUG lays it on

As well as its usual Wednesday and Thursday social rides, TBUG is organising a retro bike showcase and ride in Longford, a screening of the US cargo bike film MOTHERLOAD!, an International Womens Day ride, history ride, night ride, and community bike ride. So for most days of the week there’s something bike-related in and around Launceston!

All of the events are free, and more detail is available on the TBUG website.

Southern rides & events

In Hobart several Bicycle Network social rides have been organised including the Ranelagh River Ride, a Bike Week pub lunch ride, a gathering of riders of the iconic Brompton foldable bike and Pipeline Track.

The South Hobart Sustainable Community is screening the MOTHERLOAD! Documentary on Sunday 5 March at Wide Angle Tasmania.

We’ve also listed the usual bike kitchen events at the Hobart Bike Kitchen and Okines Community House, and the Hobart bike polo details for new and experienced players.

North-west rides

The north-west social riders have decided not to stage a Bike Week ride this year as they will be inviting the community to try out the new Leith to Turners Beach path over the refurbished Forth River bridge that is due to be finished later in March. Their ride on Sunday 26 March will head along paths from Ulverstone to Turners Beach and across the river and back.

Back on your Bike

Our Back on your Bike program will be offering skills sessions and group rides across the state with a Bike Week flavour.

We’re visiting Okines Community Bike Repair Shed to offer two sessions, our first Back on your Bike beginner MTB session at the Queens Domain, our Wednesday lunchtime and after work rides, two rides along the South Hobart Rivulet, one in Howrah and one on the Intercity Cycleway, ending the week with a session in Launceston before the TBUG community ride.

If you know anyone who would benefit from getting back on their bike, send them our way: https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/rides-and-events/back-on-your-bike/

Super Tuesday

This year our Super Tuesday annual bike count falls in Bike Week – a great volunteering opportunity to improve cycling infrastructure and gain a donation to a cause of your choice or get a discount on your membership fee.

To take part head online to register for a spot around Greater Hobart between 7 and 9 am on Tuesday 7 March.

Devonport and Launceston also conduct counts on the same day – if interested get in contact with rrstott@devonport.tas.gov.au or nigel.coates@launceston.tas.gov.au

Bike Week gloves competition

We’ve got two pairs of cosy Bontrager thermal gloves to give away to two members to get ready for the cooler months on the way.

To go in the running for a pair, just email tasoffice@bicyclenetwork.com.au letting us know where you’ll be riding in your new gloves.
