An active transport "chokepoint" is set for relief in Sydney, with the NSW Government committing to a new bridge for pedestrians and bike riders over Manly Lagoon.
The newly announced bridge will be constructed adjacent to Pittwater Road in Queenscliff, and offer much more room to move by foot and by bike at a key juncture in Sydney's Northern Beaches.
“This project resolves a significant chokepoint in our local walking and cycling network," said Member for Manly James Griffin.
"Whether you’re riding to Manly Wharf as part of your daily commute or enjoying our beautiful coastline on the weekend, this investment will make a world of difference to the everyday needs of our local community.
"We know that the biggest barrier to people taking up cycling is concerns about riding on the road, so this project will encourage more people to leave the car at home and save on the household budget.”
Construction is expected to begin in mid-2024 after a detailed design is finalised.
The 4-metre-wide bridge is being funded to the tune of $3.95M by the NSW Government, as part of its $950M active transport investment across the state.
Its bike infrastructure initiatives include plans for 600 km of new paths and lanes in Sydney's east, the completion of key links in the Sydney CBD, construction of a 91-km waterfront route between Parramatta and Sydney, and an Adventure Cycling Strategy to promote bike tourism in the regions.
“The unprecedented funding commitment for walking and cycling by the Liberals and Nationals Governments is all about making it easier for local families to move around, and this investment will have a transformative impact,” said Minister for Active Transport Rob Stokes.
