The entrance to the Port of Melbourne at Dock Link Road – the location of a recent rider fatality – will be modified in the coming weeks.
Road management authorities will install a dedicated lane on Footscray Road –controlled by traffic lights – for vehicles turning left into the Port of Melbourne at Dock Link Road.
Riders will have a dedicated green light crossing at this location, however the green for bikes won’t happen at the same time as the green for motor vehicles, according to the announcement.
Bicycle Network previously asked that the left turn into the Port at this location be closed off as it was infrequently used.
The corner was where 22-year-old Angus Collins, a member of Brunswick Cycling Club, was fatally injured in a collision with a left-turning truck. There have been no charges laid in relation to the incident.
In recent weeks Bicycle Network has been providing feedback on options for changes to the crossing.
The Footscray Road route will face major disruptions for the rest of this year as works on the elevated roadway move closer to the exiting temporary position of the shared path.
We will provide details of those changes soon.
