More bridge works at Walmer Street

The prolonged closure of the Walmer Street Bridge will continue until the end of the year.

While work on the new land bridge on the northern side of the river will wrap up by August, work will start next month on a new connection on the south side of the Yarra.

That project, to be undertaken as part of the Walmer Plaza development, will continue until December.

This means detours will be an issue for riders along the Main Yarra Trail for the rest of 2023. See map.

The south side works include a rideable ramp across to the new plaza and revegetation of the riverbank.

The City of Boroondara is responsible for the new land bridge on the north side, completion of which has been delayed because of the unusually wet weather over the past year.

Both the City of Yarra and City of Boroondara continue to advocate for the Victorian Government to fund a new fit-for-purpose mid-span bridge at Walmer Street to complement the newly constructed approaches.

The current mid-span is unsuitably narrow for the volume of bike riders and pedestrians who use it now, not to mention the future. However, the old span has been awarded heritage protection.
