Ride to New Norfolk to test your legs

A new 80km route from New Town to New Norfolk is being offered this month, providing more of a test for the legs than many of our usual social rides. But we’ve also got the monthly north-west ride heading out of Wynyard, an adventure through Kaoota and more leisurely cruise to Tranmere.

Glen Lusk–New Norfolk True Loop – Friday 28 April

The Glen Lusk-New Norfolk True Loop is an 80km day trip taking in both sides of the river on Friday 28 April.

Meet ride leaders Brian and Geoff at the Cornelian Bay car park at 9.45am to head up the Intercity Cycleway and the steep back roads to New Norfolk for lunch. Ebike riders should bring their chargers to charge batteries over lunch.

Returning via the other side of the river along tracks and roads to the Bowen Bridge then back to Cornelian Bay.

Sandfly Colliery Tramway track from Pelverata – Sunday 30 April

A little bit of history is mixed in with this 27km ride along the old Sandfly Colliery tramway on Sunday 30 April.

Meet ride leader David at 9.45am at the hall at 1239 Pelverata Road to head to Kaoota via Pelverata Road where the route will branch onto the track. The track can get muddy and is a little bumpy, so make sure you’re dressed in long tough pants and have appropriate tyres.

After the ride the group will head to Margate for a coffee or lunch, please RSVP in case of cancellation via https://ridewithgps.com/events/211245-sandfly-colliery-tramway-track-from-pelv.

Wynyard north-west riders – Sunday 30 April

Wynyard is the starting point for the monthly north-west ride on Sunday 30 April, with the route options of 20–25km or a shorter and less hilly 18km route.

Meet ride leader Keith at Gutteridge Gardens car park ready to ride at 11am on quiet country roads, following a loop out towards Lower Mount Hicks and back to Wynyard.

BYO lunch afterwards in the gardens and please RSVP in case of cancellation via https://ridewithgps.com/events/214015-nw-riders-wynyard

Extended Tranmere Trundle – Sunday 14 May

The 30km Tranmere Trundle on Sunday 14 May is a moderate ride but with a few hills thrown in for the great views.

Join ride leader David at 9.45am at the Simmons Park car park for the route along the Foreshore Trail to Tranmere then back along quieter roads and paths.

Bring along some morning tea and drinks, the group will stop for lunch on the way back at a nice café.

COVID-19 guidelines

Our social rides leaders follow a set of protocols to help make our rides safer:

  • Meeting places for rides will have plenty of space for people to maintain 1.5m to 2m distancing while unloading bikes, listening to the briefing, and getting ready to ride.
  • Riders are asked to register online or via phone so there is no paper being handed around on the day.
  • People are asked not to attend rides if they have fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath or runny nose or are in mandated isolation.
