Work is starting on a vital new bike trail crossing in Heidelberg as part of a project that will bring the Northern Bike Trail to life.
The Northern Bike Trail is a strategic cycling corridor that connects the suburbs north of Heidelberg through to Alphington.
The stage two works, which will run for about three weeks, involve installing bike lanterns to create safer crossing times for pedestrians and bike riders at the intersection of Burgundy Street and Studley Road, Heidelberg.
The first stage of works has provided a three-metre-wide shared use path from the front of Heidelberg Station in Studley Road to Burgundy Street.
The third stage, planned for early 2024, will take the link through to Darebin Street by upgrading the path that runs along the railway embankment.
This will involve installing bike lanterns at the intersection of Burgundy Street and Studley Road, constructing new pram crossings and widening the footpath on Burgundy Street near Stradbroke Avenue and a minor change to on-street parking on Burgundy Street.
One eastbound and one westbound traffic lane will be closed on Burgundy Street near Stradbroke Avenue. One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic, with traffic management on site to help direct road users.
