Riders travelling in out and of Perth's CBD from the north will now experience a safe, separated journey.
A new 3.7km shared-use path running beside the Mitchell Freeway offers riders an uninterrupted trip between the suburbs of Stirling and Balcatta.
The Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path (PSP) is 4 metres wide and runs from Civic Place to the Reid Highway. Along the way, riders and pedestrians can cruise through a new 75-metre underpass at Karrinyup Road, which runs beneath the busy intersection.
"This new 3.7km section is one of the critical missing links along the Mitchell Freeway, and I know this will be welcome news to many commuters who use the network to walk, wheel or ride to and from the city," says the Member for Balcatta David Michael.
The $23.4 million project also involves upgrades at the existing Erindale Road underpass, including some fresh artwork.
The Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan 2014-2031 identifies a set of missing links in the state's PSP network as key priorities for construction.
The program places added emphasis on Principal Shared Paths within a 15km radius of Perth's CBD and those running along freeway and railway corridors, where commuter demand is high.
Further gaps will be filled in the PSP along the Mitchell Freeway as the project is completed.
The upcoming Stephenson Avenue extension is scheduled for completion in late 2024 and will connect with an existing path to the south, offering continuous journeys all the way into the CBD.
"Completing this project is another step towards having an uninterrupted PSP network connecting our city to the northern suburbs along the Mitchell Freeway," says WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti. "Our principal shared paths are vital to encourage people of all ages and abilities to give riding a go and thanks to record investment in expanding walking and riding infrastructure, this is becoming increasingly possible."
