Designs for the forthcoming new trains for Melbourne’s Upfield, Frankston and Craigieburn lines will have more space for riders to take their bikes on board.
The X’Trapolis 2.0 train cars have reached the full-scale mock-up stage and the finer details of the carriage interiors are being finalised.
As with the design process of the new Metro Tunnel trains in 2018, and the recently redesigned VLocity trains, Bicycle Network provided input to the design team on how to make the layout suitable for riders.
The new X'Trapolis models have additional mixed-use spaces, including extra spaces for wheelchairs and flip-up seat sections where bikes can be secured to railings.
The extensive use of this feature means people with prams, luggage, bikes and wheelchairs will have plenty of options.
The walkways through the carriages are comfortable and wide, making it easier to get a bike on without inconveniencing other passengers.
The preferred bike sections within the trains will be marked with symbols at the train door.
The Victorian Government has invested $986 million for 25 new six-car trains and supporting infrastructure.
These trains will gradually replace the aging Comeng fleet and will carry about 1225 passengers.
