There are plenty of good reasons why people choose to commute by bike.
Maybe it's to save money on fuel. Maybe it's to save time by bypassing gridlocked traffic in peak hour. Maybe it's to integrate physical activity into their daily life.
Strava has added another, and introduced a tool that allows users to tally up the carbon they're saving by riding or walking to work.
In addition to the kudos that riders receive after each ride, if they tag their commutes they will also get a clear snapshot of the environmental impact of their travel choices.
Strava’s Vice President of Global Communications and Social Impact Brian Bell says the new feature unlocks a universal action that anyone on Strava can join.
"Our hope is that when armed with the power to choose between a less eco-friendly form of commuting versus a more human-powered approach - they choose the more sustainable option."
Strava, which gathers data on commuting patterns through its Metro web platform, says bike commuting is on the rise across the globe this year.
Bike commuting has grown by 97% in Paris owing to its significant investment in bike infrastructure, the data shows. Rio de Janeiro has seen growth of 62%, Berlin of 57%, Tokyo of 46% and Munich 41%.
"By providing more visibility on carbon savings, we look to inspire individual action towards a common goal of reducing carbon emissions globally," says Bell.
