Sunny weather encourages Ride2Work

Sunny weather on Ride2Work Day last week helped more people get on their bikes, with one of our biggest breakfast turnouts on the Hobart waterfront in many years.

Politicians, families, long-term riders and first-timers all came together to enjoy coffees and pastries, get their bikes checked and make a smoothie. Hats off to the big team from the Australian Antarctic Division who met in town then rode together to Kingston.

We gave away four prize bags, including a free annual membership that went to Thomas Veit, got our heads in the media, and had a look at St Johns Ambulance’s new first aid kit for bikes.

Thanks to the City of Hobart and Department of State Growth for sponsoring the breakfast and promoting the benefits of bike riding.

Bikes rates highly at Community Awards

The Tasmanian Community Achievement Awards saw three bicycle groups make the finals, with Bicycle Network walking away with the Healthy Tasmania Health and Wellbeing Award.

Hobart Bike Kitchen and Tamar Bicycle Users Group also made the final four in the awards for Sustainability and Active Tasmania.

Thanks to the other finalists and the Tasmanian Government for acknowledging the hard work that goes into keeping not-for-profit organisations running.

Seniors turn out for Back on your Bike sessions

Our Back on your Bike sessions for Seniors Week proved a hit, with classes held in Devonport, Launceston and Hobart.

Older people can access Back on your Bike at any time for free, but Seniors Week provided a chance to share the sessions with a new audience.

Thanks to The Examiner for posting a video about the session and for north-west rider Rogers Nichols for his photos of the Devonport session.

Tour of Tasmania looking for vollies

The Spirit of Tasmania Cycling Tour is Australia’s largest road race and to make it work smoothly they need volunteers on each stage.

If you are free for a couple of hours or a whole day between 8 and 12 November, sign up at https://volunteersignup.org/LQMTE

Jobs include packing up and down, staffing the registration desk, drivers, marshalls, and putting out signs.
