Take me to the river

We’ve got another water themed social rides program over the next fortnight with multiple River Derwent rides in Hobart and a loop around Port Sorell in the north west.

Brighton up – Saturday 28 May

A big km ride coming up on Saturday 28 May, with the 70 km Brighton up route.

Join ride leader David A. at 9.15 am at the Cenotaph car park for the ride out to Brighton on the eastern side of the River Derwent on road. Lunch will be at Brighton and then returning on the western side of the river via quiet roads and the Intercity Cycleway.

Please RSVP as the ride will be cancelled if weather too windy:

Squeakin’ Hawley Trundle – Sunday 29 May

The north-west riders are taking on our latest Ambassador route, with a 28 km loop around Port Sorell on Sunday 29 May.

Join ride leader Prue at 10.45 am at Addison Reserve, corner Club Drive and Fairway Crescent in Shearwater for the easy ride along quiet country roads and paths.

There will be stops for points of beauty along the way. RSVP in case of cancellation:

E-bike Coffee Cruise: Sandy Bay Scenic Roll – Thursday 2 June

Coffee Cruises are easy rides for people to get to know their e-bike and chat to other e-bike riders and the Sandy Bay Scenic roll on Thursday 2 June is one of the more popular routes.

Meet ride leader Di out the front of the Brooke Street Pier at 9.45 am or Cornelian Bay car park at 9.30 am for the 21 km ride along paths, quiet streets and painted bike lanes down to the Picnic Basket in Taroona.

Please RSVP via

Taroona Picnic Ride – Saturday 4 June

The Taroona Picnic Ride is an easy 24 km ride down to Taroona on Saturday 4 June, although if the group feels like it they will tackled Bonnet Hill.

Join ride leader Greg at 9.15 am at the Cenotaph car park for the route via quiet roads, path and painted bike lanes to the Picnic Basket for a coffee and eats.

Women on Wheels: Tunnels and Bridges – Sunday 5 June

Tunnels and Bridges is an easy ride designed to help women get more confidence on their bikes, so if that’s you, join the group on Sunday 5 June.

Meet ride leader Maryanne at the Cenotaph car park at 9.15 am for the 25 km ride mostly along the Intercity Cycleway and looping around the Montrose foreshore, with a detour down "secret" tunnels and bridges.

There will be a coffee stop along the way and please RSVP in case of cancellation

Upcoming rides & events

Social rides are featured in each edition of In the Loop, but if you want more notice visit our social rides calendar, which is regularly updated.

Bicycle Network Tasmania accredits Social Ride Leaders and requires anyone interested in leading rides to be accredited. If you would like to be one of our Ride Leaders, please email our Rides Coordinator with your contact details and what sort of riding you are interested in and we'll let you know when the next Ride Leader Skills Development Workshop is scheduled.

COVID-19 guidelines

Our social rides leaders are following a set of protocols to help make our rides compliant with government directions:

  • Meeting places for rides will have plenty of space for people to maintain 1.5 to 2 metre distancing while unloading bikes, listening to the briefing, and getting ready to ride.
  • Riders are asked to register online or via phone so there is no paper being handed around on the day.
  • Please have a mask handy if you intend to finish with coffee or snack with other riders.

People are asked not to attend rides if they have fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, shortness of breath or runny nose or are in mandated isolation.
