Kickstart a new habit this National Ride2Work Day

Many Australians have been heading into work through the recent lockdowns to keep our economy ticking and community safe. For the rest of us stuck in the home office, the opportunity to see colleagues and friends couldn’t come sooner. Whichever boat you’re in, National Ride2Work Day on Wednesday 10 November comes at a perfect time to rethink how you get to your place of work or study.

Whether you’re a regular rider or looking to create a new healthy habit, incorporating a two-wheeled commute into your routine is a great way to beat the traffic, reduce congestion/emissions and boost your personal health and happiness.

Sign up for National Ride2Work Day and join thousands of other Australians pedalling to a better normal.

With many workplaces opened to limited capacity, and some restrictions on gatherings still in place, we're planning something a little different to celebrate National Ride2Work Day this year.

Ride2Coffee in Melbourne

Riders heading into the city will be greeted by Bicycle Network volunteers and live music performances at four key locations:

Harbour Esplanade, Docklands

Neill Street Reserve, Carlton – South end of Canning St

Birrarung Marr – Lower Terrace (near the riverside shared path)

Normanby Road/Clarendon Street intersection (next to shared path/median strip)

Better yet, in partnership with the City of Melbourne, we are offering riders a free coffee voucher as our way of saying thank you for pedalling and welcome back.

Make sure you keep an eye out for our cyan cheer squad at these locations, wave hello and get your free coffee voucher.

Further information will be sent to all those registered for National Ride2Work Day closer to the date!

Hobart Ride2Work Day breakfast

Join us in Hobart out the front of Brooke Street Pier to celebrate being back at work and the warmer weather on the way. This year we’ve moved around the corner to thank Derwent Ferries for providing us with a more enjoyable way to cross the river while still being able to ride.

Other riders around the country are encouraged to adopt a two-wheeled commute on Wednesday 10 November, and celebrate the many benefits of riding a bike with your community, in a responsible manner.

Please feel free to share your celebrations with us on social media @bicycle_network using hashtag #Ride2Work.

Beat the return-to-work traffic

The reopening of cafes, schools and workplaces is certainly cause for celebration. But with social distancing concerns and capacity limits on public transport, it’s predicted that many more commuters will flock to their cars – causing serious concerns around congestion, pollution and personal health.

recent report by Infrastructure Victoria found that car trips could increase by 15 percent compared to pre-COVID levels resulting in average speeds under 21km/h during peak periods in inner Melbourne. Short car trips are a big contributor to this increase. IV estimated that over 120,OO0 walks and 14,000 cycling trips could easily replace car journeys, relieving pressure on our road system.

Importantly there is a real danger of increased car-reliance becoming entrenched making our roads a nightmare and city less liveable.

Luckily, the City of Melbourne is onboard with making it easier for you to enjoy a fun and carbon neutral commute.

City of Melbourne has already fast-tracked the delivery of 15 kilometers of protected bike lanes and has plans for a further 25 kilometers in the near future. Check out the progress so far:
