Updated designs have been released for the rail duplication through Geelong that will deliver an important new connection to the bike network.
The project comprises 5 km of new bike trails as well as a new station at South Geelong and the removal of the level crossing at Fyans Street.
Changes in the South Geelong Station precinct, along with a new section of trail along Carr Street, should greatly improve the connection to the Bellarine Rail Trail, meaning it can truly be said to start at South Geelong Station.
This should simplify the decision for riders to take the train to South Geelong and then head out through the Bellarine Peninsula along the trail.
The new paths along the rail corridor will create a continuous bike and pedestrian connection between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, greatly improving access to public transport for Geelong residents and providing links to existing and proposed bike routes.
As well as the new trail the length of Carr Street, there will be a new section between Breakwater Road and Gundog Lane, along Station Road to Marshall Station, and from Marshall Station through to Reserve Road, connecting to the Baanip Boulevard path at the Surf Coast Highway level crossing and to the new shared user path along Barwon Heads Road being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria.
The rail project is jointly funded by state and federal governments.
According to the project, the shared user paths will celebrate and enhance the local area through landscaping, signage, public artworks and rest and reflection areas.
There will also be a major boost to bike parking at railway stations with 150 new bike hoops and secure Parkiteer cages at South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds.
