The Department of Transport (DoT) has suggested modifications to the pop-up bike lanes across the City of Port Phillip.
In a letter addressed to the City of Port Phillip, DoT proposed changes to the pop-ups based on review processes and feedback received from the community.
The 38 km of temporary pop-up bike lanes across the City of Port Phillip are part of a trial of 100 kilometres of new bike routes throughout Melbourne suburbs intended to improve bike connections across the city.
Alan Feda, Department of Transport’s Executive Director Inner Metro said: “The changes we are proposing will help to strike a balance between community needs, and improving bike rider safety in the City of Port Phillip.”
The proposed changes include:
- The removal of the central pop-up lanes at Bridge Street, Port Melbourne.
- Ending the trials at Amstrong Street, Middle Park and Nelson Road, Port Melbourne will also be ended.
- Reinstatement of the left turn traffic lanes at the intersection of Bridge Street and Bay Street, Port Melbourne and Williamstown Road, Port Melbourne.
- Removal of bollards at Lyons Street, Port Melbourne.
If approved by the council, the changes will be implemented in the coming months with continual evaluation and community engagement.
