Work starts on new Pascoe Vale route

Work gets underway this weekend on the new upgraded 2.5 km route through Pascoe Vale between Boundary Road and O’Hea Streets.

The Glenroy to Coburg link is along sections of Derby Street, Kent Road, and Cumberland Road.

The project addresses a missing north-south link through Pascoe Vale and also provides opportunities for more local trips.

The Department of Transport project will continue in stages until late November, with work underway at night between 7:00pm and 5:00am.

The project comprises a suite of measures to improve bike access and reduce risk, including:

  • Green pavement bicycle lanes
  • Upgrades to six intersections
  • Raised safety platforms
  • Safer speed limits
  • Marked bike stencils along the route
  • Speed cushions to encourage slower vehicle speeds

Importantly speed cushions are being located on the approach to roundabouts to slow vehicles, thus enabling bike riders to merge into the traffic stream and be visible to drivers as they travel through the roundabout.

Speeds generally should be lower as speed limits on most of the route will be 40 km/h, aided with traffic-calming speed bumps in Kent Street.

Concrete islands will be installed at the intersection of Kent Road and Derby Street and there will be a 1.2 metre wide bike lane—with green pavement paint at conflict points— on Cumberland Road between Boundary Road and Kent Road.

The bike boxes at intersections Boundary Road and Cumberland Road are welcome as they will position bikes where they can be seen and will minimise conflict with turning vehicles, as well as helping pedestrians at the crossing by reducing vehicle incursion.

The works will be on:

  • Derby Street, between Kent Road and O’Hea Street
  • Kent Road, between Boundary Road and Derby Street
  • Cumberland Road, between Boundary Road and Kent Road

There will be local road detours with signage and traffic management on site to help direct road users.
