Mornington Park path ready to roll

Riding a bike to Mornington Park Primary School is about to get easier, with Bicycle Network’s Ride2School ActivePaths opening next week on Tuesday 20 July.

Three separate ActivePaths routes have been mapped out that lead to the school, giving students and parents an easy, off-road ride to school from home. The routes are highlighted with specially designed decals that stick to the pavement and point in the direction of travel.

Around 250 students from Mornington Park Primary School will join a celebration on Tuesday to open the ActivePaths and ride them for the first time. Among those riding the paths will be 30 students who participated in a workshop in April to help plan the routes.

Bicycle Network spokesperson Leyla Asadi said Ride2School ActivePaths will help students and families ride and walk to school by taking the guesswork out of planning trips.

“Many students and parents want to ride to school, however they can find it difficult to know which streets are the best for riding,” said Ms Asadi.

“Ride2School ActivePaths will show the Mornington Park school community the best places to ride and make it easier to enjoy the fun of active trips to school.”

Mornington Park Primary School ActivePaths routes total 2.6 kilometres and use a mix of existing off-road bike trails as well as footpaths, which can legally be ridden on by children under 13 years old, their siblings and parents.

Survey data shows that ActivePaths increase the number of students who ride to school, with Alfredton Primary School in Ballarat recently reporting that the proportion of students who ride increased from 26% to 47% after ActivePaths were developed.
