Glen Huntly traffic challenges

Work to dig a massive 1.2-km trench through Glen Huntly for level crossing removals is fully underway and there are major road closures for the next two months.

Riders through Caulfield, Glen Huntly and Carnegie face challenges getting around and through the suburbs.

The trench to lower the rail tracks under Neerim and Glen Huntly Roads is both long and wide and up to one truck a minute will be hauling soil out from multiple locations.

Traffic detour routes will be packed with trucks and regular traffic will be diverted from multiple closed roads.

Buses will be replacing trains and trams.

Works will be underway 24/7 with a team of 500 workers on site.

Riders have the advantage of being able to use local roads to pick their way through the area, likely to be much more effective than the traffic detour routes.

Footpaths are mostly open, but there will be significant parking impacts.

The project consists of new rail-under-road crossings at Nearing and Glen Huntly Roads, a new Glen Huntly station as well a disentanglement of the Frankston and Caulfield lines at Caulfield Station.
